Update on Grade-Year Team Transition
Beginning next season, US Soccer will shift from birth-year age groups to grade-year age groups (August 1-July 31). This means players will now be grouped more closely with their school classmates. We want to share this with you in the most honest and hopeful way: change can feel uncomfortable at first, but this is a short-term adjustment that brings long-term benefits for our players, our club, and the game in our country.
Why This Change Is a Win for Kids
This update is built around what matters most in youth development: joy, friendships, belonging, and a clear pathway for every child.
- Kids stay with classmates and friends: Players train, grow, and compete alongside peers they see every day at school. This increases confidence, enjoyment, and social connection, which are huge drivers of long-term development.
- No more "gap years" during big school transitions: Players won't be left without a team in 8th/9th grade or senior year. Every season has a clear home.
- A smoother path for older players and college recruiting: College coaches recruit by graduating class, and this puts players in the right windows at the right time.
- Balanced, healthy, and developmentally appropriate teams: Grouping players by grade supports physical, social, and emotional development, all of which are crucial for long-term success.
We Know Change Can Feel Big, But the Discomfort Will Be Short-Lived
We completely understand the emotions players and families may feel. Some players may shift teams, or have new teammates or coaches. That can be tough at first, and it's okay to feel that. Here's what we know from years of developing players:
- Kids adjust quickly. Friendships form fast. New teams settle in. Confidence grows again. And before long, this will just feel normal and better aligned.
- Creating long-term stability. Our short-term discomfort is creating long-term stability, clarity, and opportunity.
How We'll Support Every Player
- Earlier Coach Assignments. Earlier coach assignments will give players plenty of time to connect with their new age.
- Age Group Specific Trainings: Age group specific training will begin in March. Sessions will be grouped by similar levels of play to help players feel comfortable prior to tryouts with new coaches and prospective teammates.
- Direct, Open Communication: As directors, we want to hear from you. Please reach out.
PLAY-UP Requests
Play-up will continue to be an option, and we'll use a clear developmental evaluation process to make sure each placement is right for the player long-term. The level of flexibility will depend on the team environment:
National Competition Teams: For our nationally competitive teams, play-up decisions will be more structured and selective to protect the competitive level, roster balance, and long-term development of all players involved.
State Competition Teams: For our state competitive teams, there will be more flexibility, allowing us to honor friendships, support social fit, and create environments where players feel confident, connected, and excited to play.
Across all levels, our goal is the same: the right player, in the right place, at the right time, with both development and well-being in mind.
We're in this together
As a club, we believe this shift will strengthen soccer in Utah and throughout the country. And while the adjustment may take a moment to settle, the long-term benefits are real and lasting. We are grateful for your trust, your partnership, and your commitment to your child's journey. If you have questions or want to talk through your player's situation, please reach out. We're here to walk with you through every step.
